The Town of Dewey Beach is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Building Official / Inspector. The essential function of this position is to perform various inspections for code compliance, review/approve applications for construction permits, and ensure compliance with flood plain management.

This position is responsible for conducting various inspections of properties, responding to citizen complaints, working with property owners to achieve compliance, following up on business licenses and permits, and maintaining detailed reports. The position requires performing exterior property inspections, managing code violation cases, and maintaining accurate records of all building applications.

The position involves enforcement of the Town of Dewey Beach Zoning Ordinances, Property Maintenance Code, International Residential Code, as well as FEMA building requirements for properties in flood zones.  Strong customer service skills are required. 

The successful candidate will have International Property Maintenance Code and/or International Residential Code Certification (or be able to obtain such certifications within 12 months of employment).  Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook is required.  Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required.  

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Degree or GED

            (3) years’ experience in construction trade work

            Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

            Must pass our acceptable standard criminal/financial background check

            Must be able to work in all types of weather.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. year of college or specialized vocational training in construction or closely related field in building code compliance, ICC Certification (Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, Permit Technician)

The Town of Dewey Beach is seeking a Town Manager. This is a full-time position responsible for all aspects of managing Town business and activities. The Town Manager will be a team-oriented, strategic-thinking professional with strong finance and budget management experience, staff leadership and communication skills. Financial, analytical and human resources skills, as well as supervisory experience, are essential. Experience with planning & zoning, grant writing, economic development, and resourcefulness. Demonstrated ability to work with community groups, residents and business owners is essential.  Familiarity with seasonal beach community issues is desired; candidate must be able to supervise police, beach patrol and code enforcement departments, as well as building management, administration and finance.

The Town has a small workforce a full-time employees and part-time employees that provides municipal services including police, beach patrol, public works and administrative services. Public utilities and services are handled by other entities. The Town Manager oversees Town staff, and a budget. The Town Manager also leads the Town’s economic development efforts, including maintaining a close working relationship with the Town’s business community. The Town Manager’s duty hour will vary as dictated by Town needs, and the candidate will be required to be “on call” in the event of an emergency. This is an FLSA-exempt position.

Candidates for Town Manager must have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in public administration or related field; law degree or Master’s degree in public administration, business administration or closely related field is preferred; or equivalent professional experience in the field.        
  • Three to five years plus of increasingly responsible local government management experience.
  • Proven leadership, managerial, and interpersonal skills to lead a financially fit organization.
  • Completed NIMS training or successful completion within one year of appointment.

The Town Manager will be appointed by the Commissioners for a 90-day probationary period. The successful candidate will be awarded a one-year, renewable contract.  Competitive salary plus benefits package. The successful candidate will be required to provide references and to undergo a complete background check.

Posted 12/28/2017: DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

The Town of Dewey Beach is seeking applicants for a flexible part time position (up to 30 hours per week, possibly more) to fill the vacancy of the Finance Director. The position is responsible for preparation of budget and financial accounting for the Town of Dewey Beach.  The applicant will work closely with the Town Manager and Department Heads, Budget and Finance Committee, in preparation of Town budget in addition to preparing monthly financial reports.  This position liaisons with Human Resources, the Audit Committee and assists with the annual audit.

The successful applicant for the position requires an accounting or bookkeeping background. QuickBooks experience is required where Town financial records are maintained.  The applicant must have good communication and writing skills, college degree or comparable work experience within accounting and finance.
