SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2012

FROM 10:00 A.M. TO 6:00 P.M.

SEPTEMBER 1 AND 8, 10:00 A.M. TO 2:00 P.M. AND

SEPTEMBER 15, 10 A.M. TO 6:00 P.M.

 

 

VOTERS WILL BE ASKED TO FILL TWO (2) COMMISSIONER SEATS - TERMS BEGINNING OCTOBER, 2012 AND ENDING SEPTEMBER, 2014.  AS OF THIS DATE, THOSE CANDIDATES WHO HAVE FILED FOR THESE SEATS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  1. Denise Campbell (resident)
  2. Gary Mauler (non-resident)
  3. Courtney Riordan (resident)
  4. Richard Solloway (resident)

Qualifications to vote:  Section 10 of the Dewey Beach Town Charter specifies that each person eighteen years of age or older, who isabonafideresidentanddomiciliaryoftheTownofDewey Beach, or who is an owner of real property within the Town, or who holds a valid lease for a term of five years or more on propertywithin theTown,shall bequalified tovoteintheelection ofTownofficialsasherein provided. A leaseholder seeking qualification as a voter under this subsection will be required to file a copy of a valid lease at the time of voter registration.  A non-resident person eighteen years of age or older who is both a settlor/creator and trustee of a valid trust towhich real property which islocated within theTownhasbeen conveyed which conveyance isrecorded in the Office of the Recorder of Deeds in and for Sussex County shall be qualified to vote in the election of Town officials, provided that the Trust document which identifies the trustee(s) and the settlor(s)/creator(s) must be presented at the time of registration.

Chapter 48 of Dewey Beach Town Code establishes the authority to deny registration “to any person to whom a transfer of property is made or to whom a lease is executed for the sole and limited purpose of qualifying the person to vote.”

Qualified voters may vote in person on Election Day, Saturday, September 15, 2012 or by absentee ballot.

TOWN OF DEWEY BEACH

IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING ABSENTEE VOTING PROCEDURES

 

In 2007, the Delaware Legislature made changes to the law governing municipal elections.  The current process for voting by absentee ballot is mandated by the revised Delaware law.

Voters planning to vote by absentee ballot must first submit an “Affidavit for Absentee Ballot.”  Obtain an Affidavit from Town Hall by picking it up or calling 302-227-6363 to receive one by mail.  It is also available from the Town’s web site at www.townofdeweybeach.comunder “2012 Election Information.”  Please do not delay.  Deadlines apply.

 

  1. Submit an “Affidavit for Absentee Ballot” to request an absentee ballot. 
  2. Complete the Affidavit according to the directions. 
  3. Notarization is NOT required for non-residents.
    Notarization is NOT required for anyone who, with proper identification, presents an affidavit
    in person at Town Hall. 
    Notarization IS required for permanent residents who vote by mail for a reason in Section B
    of the Affidavit.
  4. Sign the affidavit in the appropriate place.
  5. Return the completed Affidavit to Town Hall by fax, hand-delivery, or mail.  Fax is the fastest method of return.  Fax affidavits to (1)-302-227-8319.
  6. DEADLINE:  Affidavits must be received by 12:00 noon, Friday, September 14, 2012.
  7. If the Affidavit is approved, Town Hall will mail the voter an absentee ballot and other materials for voting.  If there is a problem with the Affidavit, Town Hall will contact the applicant.  
  8. DEADLINE:  Ballots will not be mailed after Tuesday, September 11, 2012.  After this deadline, each approved voter must come to Town Hall to pick up his or her absentee ballot in person.  Ballots will not be provided to any other person.
  9. Follow the instructions provided with the absentee ballot. 
  10. Return the voted ballot (in its security envelope) by U.S. mail or hand-delivery to Town Hall during the times specified on page one of this notice.  Ballots may also be hand-delivered to the Life Saving Station between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Election Day, Saturday, September 15, 2012 ONLY.  Faxed ballots will not be counted.
  11. Qualified voters may also appear at Town Hall during regular business hours and from 10 a.m.-
    2 p.m. on September 1 and 8 (the two Saturdays prior to Election Day) to request and complete the Affidavit.  Approved voters can receive and submit their ballots at that time. If a voter completes an Affidavit and does not intend to immediately complete and submit a ballot, then the ballot must be returned in accordance with #10 above.

DEADLINE:  All absentee ballot votes must be received before 6 p.m. on Election Day, Saturday, September 15, 2012.  See #10 and #11 above for instructions.  Late ballots will not be counted.
